All other capital cities, especially in Africa, are products of the colonial era. It is the history of this unique African city that is told in this book. The book covers nearly 100 years of the city's history taking the reader through the life of the city and generations of its inhabitants. The physical development of the city and the cultural, political and economic metamorphosis of its inhabitants is narrated from a totally new and creative perspective. The book is a roller coaster of history. Reading this book one can actually experience the changing fortunes of the city and its dwellers as they progress through periods of war and peace, revolution and reaction. One finds the residents of the city passing through conflicting emotions of loyalty and betrayal, forgiveness and vengeance, love and aversion, cowardice and courage, defeat and triumph. The book is a gripping read because all the stories in it are real and narrated through the lenses of mainly that of the author, his family, friends, neighbours and acquaintances. |
